Freedom First is making several changes to its retail banking network effective May 29, 2015. The Squires student office on Virginia Tech's campus is relocating to the full-service community branch at 1204 South Main Street, and two Salem-area satellite offices - at LewisGale Hospital and Steel Dynamics - are relocating to 1235 Electric Avenue in Salem. These shifts are the result of changes in consumer behavior and technology, as well as the addition of more branches in the Roanoke Valley.
Squires Branch at Virginia Tech
Since 1991, we have made affordable consumer banking services available to Virginia Tech students as well as faculty and staff. Times have changed. The technologies we now offer members, such as mobile banking, remote deposit, ATMs, and person-to-person transfers within online banking, are making physical access less necessary for this technologically savvy demographic. The Squires student site currently operates with only two tellers, and Freedom First leadership has determined that relocating the Squires operations is in the best interests of the Credit Union and our membership.
Freedom First will continue to serve the Virginia Tech community through our full-service South Main branch, our Contact Center, and online and mobile services. The vast majority of Virginia Tech community members already bank remotely and use the South Main branch, which is only 2 miles from Squires.
LewisGale and SDI Satellite Offices
Freedom First opened the Salem-area satellite offices as part of merger agreements at a time when the Credit Union had only one full-service Roanoke branch. Roanoke-area members now have access to seven full-service branches, numerous free online and mobile services, and thousands of surcharge-free ATMs. SDI and LG members have taken advantage of these conveniences to the point that each satellite branch now performs very few transactions with only a single teller onsite. We will maintain our ATM onsite at LewisGale Hospital.
As of May 29, each Freedom First branch will be a full-service branch, where every member’s banking needs can be met onsite. Outside the branches, the vast majority of our members' transactional needs can be met through:
- FFCU Mobile and Mobile Plus
- Our online banking platform with remote deposit
- Our extensive surcharge-free ATM network, and
- Telephone banking services.
Our ability to adapt to our members’ changing needs and banking preferences is one of Freedom First's many strengths. We appreciate the contribution each site has made to our rich history, and we look forward to serving our members through our full-service branch network and robust online and mobile channels.
